L'oro sopravvive al fuoco, caldo abbastanza
per farti cenere in un'urna standard.
Una busta in grossolano ufficiale camoscio
contiene la tua fede che non brucia.

Papà mi disse di dir loro al Saint James
che l'anello doveva andare nell'inceneritore.
Quell'eternità inciso con entrambi i nomi
è la sua certezza si sarebbero incontrati, 'più tardi'.

Io come figlio firmai pel vestiario impacchettato
il cardigan, grembiule, mutande, vestito, reggiseno -

il commesso telefonò di sotto: 6-8-8-3-1?
Ha ancora l'anello? (Breve pausa) Sì!

È sul mio caldo palmo adesso, il tuo anello lustro!

Io sento le tue ceneri, testa, braccia, seni, utero, gambe
setacciate nel suo cerchio lentamente, come in quell'oggetto
che lasciavi io guardassi per cronometrare le uova.

Gold survives the fire that's hot enough
to make you ashes in a standard urn.
An envelope of coarse official buff
contains your wedding ring which wouldn't burn.

Dad told me I'd to tell them at St James's
that the ring should go in the incinerator.
That 'eternity' inscribed with both their names is
his surety that they'd be together, 'later'.

I signed for the parcelled clothing as the son,
the cardy, apron, pants, bra, dress -

the clerk phoned down: 6-8-8-3-1?
Has she still her ring on? (Slight pause) Yes!

It's on my warm palm now, your burnished ring!

I feel your ashes, head, arms, breasts, womb, legs,
sift through its circles slowly, like that thing
you used to let me watch to time the eggs.

Tony Harrison è nato a Leeds nel 1937. I suoi volumi di poesia comprendono The Loiners (che ottenne il Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize), Continuous v. (trasmesso su Channel 4 nel 1987 e vincitore del Royal Television Society Award) e The Gaze of the Gorgon (premiato col Whitbread Prize for Poetry). Noto come il più grande poeta inglese per il teatro e il cinema, TH ha scritto numerose opere poetiche per il National Theatre, la BBC, Channel 4 e per festival teatrali all'aperto in Grecia e in Austria. Le sue opere teatrali complete 1973-1985 sono state pubblicate da Penguin, mentre quelle più recenti (tra cui The Tracker of Oxyrynchus, Square Rounds e The Common Chorus) da Faber&Faber. Il suo film Black Daisies for the Bride ha ottenuto il Prix Italia nel 1994. Nel 1995 è uscita per Faber la raccolta The Shadow of Hiroshima & Other Film Poems. Nel 1996 è uscita per Einaudi la raccolta V. e altre poesie, a cura di Massimo Bacigalupo.
